SCHOLA SCRIPTA  


The ACADEMIA LATINA of the Faculty of Humanities, University of Pretoria, offers school pupils (Grade 6 and upwards), students and adults a unique opportunity to discover Latin and the riches of the Classical World.


SCHOLA SCRIPTA is a correspondence course consisting of 4 courses. A student who has successfully completed a course will receive a certificate issued by the University of Pretoria. Subscribers can work at their own pace. Two possible examination dates (in June and November) enable you to complete either one course annually or per semester. After completing SS IV, Potchefstroom University offers a follow-up correspondence course in Oxford Latin (OLC I).


SCHOLA SCRIPTA offers you :


  • An introduction to the Latin language
  • basic language structures & vocabulary
  • enrichment of your English and Afrikaans vocabulary based on  Latin roots, e.g. manus (hand): manuscript/manuskrip, manicure/manikuur, manipulate/manipuleer, manufacture, manifest/manifes.
  • a basis for learning languages related to Latin, e.g. French, Spanish, Italian and Portuguese.
  • better understanding of the many scientific terms that comes directly from Latin in professions such as Medicine, Law, Botany, Zoology, etc.
  • Latin motto’s, abbreviations and expressions used daily in English and Afrikaans, e.g. status quo, per se, et cetera, p.m., A.D.

  • A treasure box of Classical Mythology
  • stories about the Greek and Roman gods
  • adventures of legendary heroes like Hercules, Jason  and Ulysses

  • The riches of the Classical Way of Life
  • by comparing the Roman way of life with ours, we discover how manyof our customs were influenced by the Romans
  • exploring Pompeii, a city destroyed by volcanic eruption

  • A smattering of Roman History
  • to understand why the Romans played such an important role in Europe and why today their influence can still be felt all over the world

Please note: The course material is fully bilingual. The assignments and examination paper may be answered in either English or Afrikaans.
